“We are saddened to hear today’s announcement made by Wasps Holdings Limited. The loss of the fixture this weekend is hugely disappointing, not only for those associated with Wasps, but also our own supporters and the wider rugby community as a whole. ” Speaking about the fixture earlier in the day before Wasps forfeited the gam, Bristol director of rugby Pat Lam said: “We try and keep guys topped up with game time. One of things you learn is the longer a player doesn’t play the more chance they have of getting injured. "We have had guys playing at Hartpury, Clifton, Old Reds, Cinderford, Taunton, Weston - we have just been trying to get guys rugby, particularly with them being able to train with us and then go and play for a club.

“But it is important they get a chance to play the Bears way. With our Premiership fixture against Worcester gone in Round Seven, we have a midweek game against Bath in the Premiership Ruby Cup which is an opportunity for guys as well. But Rob [Baxter, Chiefs director of rugby] asked for this game because a lot of us directors of rugby are in the same boat, you need a good squad to deal with the injuries in the season but they don’t get enough game time. “Rob approached me about it last week and I said let’s get through the weekend and see how injuries go but we can use a lot of our academy and the rest of our senior squad and get a decent run-out.

Chairman and chief executive of Exeter Rugby Club Tony Rowe said: “Our match-day experiences will continue as normal for all supporters, including our Super Saturday Experience, corporate offerings, as well as pre and post-match entertainment. “For those supporters who have tickets for the Wasps fixture, these will still be valid for Saturday and we encourage everyone to come along and enjoy what will be another exciting fixture with Bristol. All match-day travel arrangements will remain in place for the game as well.

Exeter Chiefs confirm Bristol friendly in place of Wasps gameExeter Chiefs will play a Bristol Bears second team in a friendly at Sandy Park on Saturday in lieu of facing Wasps Rugby in the Gallagher Premiership. Wasps confirmed this afternoon they are unable to fulfil the Round Six league fixture with insufficient cash reserves to continue operations until a deal is agreed with a potential buyer.

The club is “likely” to enter into administration “in the coming days” with Wasps currently unable to repay a £35million bond that had helped finance the club’s relocation to Coventry in 2014. If Wasps do go into administration, which appears to be only a matter of time, they will follow Worcester Warriors in doing so with the latter suspended from the Premiership for the rest of the season.
